The registry is the heart and soul of Microsoft Windows XP. In my other registry books, I said the same thing about the registry in every version of Windows since Microsoft Windows 95, and by the time you're finished reading this book, I hope you'll agree. The registry contains the configuration data that makes the operating system work. The registry enables developers to organize configuration data in ways that are impossible with other mechanisms, such as INI files. It's behind just about every feature in Windows XP that you think is cool. More importantly, it enables you to customize Windows XP in ways you can't through the user interface.
Windows XP and every application that runs on Microsoft's latest desktop operating system do absolutely nothing without consulting the registry first. When you double−click a file, Windows XP consults the registry to figure out what to do with it. When you install a device, Windows XP assigns resources to the device based on information in the registry and then stores the device's configuration in the registry. When you run an application such as Microsoft Word 2002, the application looks up your preferences in the registry. If you were to monitor the registry during a normal session, you'd see the registry serves up thousands of values within minutes.
In this book, you will learn how to customize the registry, but you must also learn how to take care of the registry. You must learn how to back up the registry so you can restore it if things go awry. You must also learn the best practices for editing the registry safely...

Windows Server 2003 for Dummies

Welcome to Windows Server 2003 For Dummies, the book that helps anyone who's unfamiliar with Windows Server 2003 (or networks in general) find his or her way around a Windows Server 2003-based network. In a wired world, networks provide the links that tie all users together. Even if you're not using a network already, you probably will use one someday! This book tells you what's going on, in basic, straightforward terms.
Although a few fortunate individuals may be acquainted with Windows Server 2003 and networks already, a lot more of us are not only unfamiliar with networking but also downright scared of it. To those who may be worried about the prospect of facing new and difficult technologies, we say, "Don't worry. Be happy." Using a network is not beyond anyone's wits or abilities — it's mostly a matter of using a language that ordinary people can understand.
Ordinary folks are why this book talks about using Windows Server 2003 and networks in simple — and deliberately irreverent — terms. Nothing is too highfalutin to be mocked, nor too arcane to state in plain English. And when we do have to get technical, we'll warn you and make sure to define our terms to boot...

Microsoft Office 2000/Visual Basic for Applications Fundamentals

Creating documents, building databases, and writing e-mail are just some of the things you can do with Microsoft Office 2000. But Office 2000 also gives you a way to do these and other tasks, as well as extend built-in functionality, through Microsoft Visual Basic programming. This book shows you how to develop the Visual Basic code that will let your Visual Basic programs automate tasks, tie content together, extend existing functionality, and develop new functionality for Office applications through COM add-ins. You'll learn how to take features beyond their original design in order to meet the needs of your customers or your company.
Microsoft Office 2000 Visual Basic for Applications Fundamentals is organized by task rather than by application. For example, the task of retrieving the current selection in the Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint, and Microsoft Outlook applications is discussed in one place. The same goes for saving Word, Excel, or PowerPoint documents. Whether you need to develop code that accomplishes a task in any single application or in all of them, you will understand the similarities and differences among the applications. The side-by-side comparisons and code samples give you a way of learning how to write code to accomplish the same task in several Office applications...
